LUDHIANA: Fruits, sweets and a langar would make the festival of lights and Bandi Chhor Divas special for inmates of Ludhiana central jail.
The langar would be organised with the help of jail authorities, where the food would be cooked by inmates for inmates. The central jail houses three gurdwaras.
Superintendent of Ludhiana central jail Shivraj Singh Nandgarh said, "The jail authorities had written to all SSPs, CPs and DCs to get fruits and sweets arranged for jail inmates with the help of NGOs. The Ludhiana commissioner of police had assigned an official who is coordinating with us and some NGO to arrange fruits and sweets for inmates. Besides, we will also provide sweets at the jail canteen and the inmates may purchase it for themselves."
Initially, the authorities had planned to arrange a cultural programme for inmates, but they dropped the plan due to security issue. Gathering all 4,300 inmates at one place for a cultural programme might have caused trouble, they felt.
Similarly, sweets and fruits will be provided to inmates in Ludhiana women jail too.
