NAVI MUMBAI: A 10-year-old special child from Kenya, who had gone missing while travelling with his caretaker in the Panvel-CSMT train on Thursday, was reunited with his mother within four hours, due to swift action by the Vashi GRP. The child had failed to alight at Vashi platform due to morning rush.
Sambhaji Katare, senior inspector of Vashi GRP said, "A Kenyan woman, Mercy Kairechi (54), had come from Nairobi with her two minor sons, both special children, for their admission at NMMC's Education and Training Centre (ETC), a special education school near Vashi railway station. They resided temporarily in Nerul. On Thursday morning, the Kenyan boy Leni and his younger brother were accompanied by their caretaker, Godfrey Derena, while travelling from Nerul to ETC at Vashi. Around 10.15 am when the train reached Vashi station, as there was a huge rush, the caretaker managed to alight with Leni's younger brother, but Leni could not get down and he remained in the train that travelled towards CSMT."
Inspector Katare further said, "Leni's mother and caretaker came to Vashi GRP outpost and lodged his missing person complaint. The on-duty Juvenile cell constable Pallavi Kumbhar immediately directed GRP constable Anandi Khot to circulate Leni's photograph on GRP's WhatsApp group. Around 3pm, GRP constable Dhananjay Markad deployed on Mankhurd platform spotted a Kenyan boy seated alone on a bench. Constable Markad took his custody and brought him to Vashi GRP outpost, where he was reunited with his mother."
He said, "Leni was traced after four hours, as he had travelled in the train till CSMT and he remained seated in the same train till it returned to Panvel. As Leni was unaware of the train route, he alighted at Mankhurd platform and sat on a bench, till he was spotted by the GRP constable Markad."
