COIMBATORE: A man was charred to death after a Maruti 800 vehicle carrying two LPG cylinders exploded at Kottai Eswaran Temple in Ukkadam police limits of Coimbatore, early on Sunday morning.
The incident took place right in front of the temple at around 4.10am.
Police immediately rushed to the spot and helped the fire and rescue services to put off the fire. The vehicle was completely damaged in the incident and mangled remains of the vehicle have been taken off the road.
The body of a deceased has been shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. However, while the owner of the car has been identified, the identity of the deceased is being checked. The owner of the vehicle is from Pollachi.
Police suspect that a leakage in the LPG cylinder could have caused the explosion.
Higher police officials, including city police commissioner V Balakrishnan, visited the spot.
He said that it appears that the death was caused by an explosion due to LPG leak. However, all possible angles are being probed.
Ukkadam, a heavy Muslim populated area, has been a sensitive place.
In order to prevent any untoward incidents, a large number of police have been deployed in and around the Ukkadam area. The incident site has been cordoned off to prevent onlookers. Media too was not allowed to the spot.
