Corpn to set up garbage truck washing units
Coimbatore: The municipal corporation plans to set up garbage truck washing units at the Vellalore dump yard, Peelamedu and Ukkadam garbage transferring centres.
The corporation council has passed a resolution to spend 47.4 lakh to set up the units. While 9.8 lakh each will be spent on the units, 6 lakh will be spent to dig borewells at each place.
The idea was first mooted by east zone chairman Ilakkumi Izhamselvi. Garbage vehicles never get washed until they are taken to service centres or for fitness certificate renewal, she said. “Because of this, the vehicles need to be replaced frequently. Just by cleaning them once a week, their life span can be increased, and frequent breakdowns can be avoided.”
In the council meeting held on Wednesday, the councillors complained that the trucks sent to service centres are redeployed after months, affecting garbage cleaning work.
“It takes more than three months for the vehicles to be redeployed due to the delay in clearing bills. When garbage clearing works get delayed, the residents pull us up, not the corporation officials,” central zone chairman Meena Loganathan said.
Sending the vehicles to service centres is not only a time-consuming process but also expensive, a corporation official said.
“We plan to set up an exclusive service centre for the corporation vehicles,” she added.
