PUNE: Colleges will soon offer certificate or crash courses in cyber security. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has informed all colleges as per University Grants Commission (UGC) directives to start new courses in cyber security where students will learn about cyber awareness, crimes and prevention.
The syllabus, prepared by the UGC, will create more aware, responsive, and responsible digital citizens, contributing to an overall healthy cyber security posture and ecosystem.
Prafulla Pawar, registrar of SPPU, said: "In view of the importance of cyber security and for propagating cyber hygiene amongst higher education institutions, colleges should take necessary steps for implementation of the syllabus of cyber security course at postgraduate levels in all the streams. The exposure of the students to the cyber security programme will lead to learning the foundations of cyber security and threats."
Pawar said the course would also help develop skills in students that could help them plan, implement, and monitor cybersecurity mechanisms to ensure the protection of information technology assets.
"Students will be exposed to governance, regulatory, legal, economic, environmental, social, and ethical contexts of cyber security," he added.
Some important guidelines in the UGC's syllabus included exposure of students to the responsible use of online social media networks, understanding the impact of cyber crimes and threats with solutions and selecting suitable ethical principles and committing to professional responsibilities and human values and contribute value and wealth for the benefit of society.
