Chinchinim p’yat to act against improper disposal of garbage
Panaji: After finding that hotels on the South Goa coastal belt, instead of setting up material recovery facilities (MRF) and biodigesters, are engaging contractors to dispose of their mixed waste, the Chinchinim-Deussa panchayat has appealed to the hotels for proper disposal of garbage.
“Hotels want to give the best service to their guests, but in the bargain are making a mess of other villages,” said panch member Frank Viegas, in whose ward illegal dumping and an illegal piggery was found.
The panchayat, primary health centre Chinchinim and FDA received complaints from residents regarding illegal dumping of hotel garbage in Palmagrande Socovaddo, Chinchinim.
“We are facing a lot of problems with the foul smell of piggery and pig excreta waste being released into the adjacent River Sal and open fields which creates a nuisance for us,” read a complaint filed by Dorothy Siqueira.
In another complaint, Nelson Braganza stated that the garbage is being dumped in his property illegally without any permissions from any authorities.
Following the complaints, the Chinchinim-Deussa village sarpanch Valentio Barretto together with panch members, health officials and villagers carried out an inspection of illegal dumping of mixed garbage and piggery at Palmagrande. “We have found the complaints to be true. We asked the owner to stop the illegalities,” Barreto said.
Sanitary inspector Jagdeep Bhaga said action will be taken under the Health Act.
Presley Mascarehas, whose property was inspected, told reporters that the waste is being directly placed into the piggery and not dumped anywhere, and added that he is keeping his property clean.
