Ranchi: Of 68 industries in
Jharkhand agreeing to disclose their pollution standards and get regularly monitored by the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB), over 50% (36 units) have got single-star rating, indicating that they are the least compliant to norms and have been polluting the air with their emissions. On the other hand, 23 industries have received five-star rating for adhering to the pollution control norms, prescribed by the regulators from time to time.
Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, Jindal Steel and Power Limited, Ramgarh, Maithon Power Limited, Dhanbad, and Hindalco in Ranchi and Damodar Valley Corporation are among the 23 industries that have obtained five-star rating. In contrast, Inland Power, Ramgarh, Bihar Sponge and Iron Limited, Seraikela, ACC Ltd (Nevco) and ACC Ltd Cement Works, Chaibasa, and Rungta Mines Limited in Seraikela feature in the one-star rating category.
Five industrial units have obtained four-star rating, three have got three-star rating, while one has got double-star rating. It was launched by the JSPCB in collaboration with University of Chicago's Centre in Delhi, EPIC-India, to enable the industries monitor their own performance and make the data available in public domain.
