PUNE: Pune has no rain forecast from Oct 23, though a drastic change in weather can be expected soon, with a reduction in night and rise in day temperatures from Oct 24, weather experts told TOI.
Night temperature in Pune is likely to plunge to 19 degrees C in the coming days, especially in areas like Shivajinagar, Pashan and Lohegaon, locations which historically have a lower minimum temperature in comparison to others where the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regularly monitors day and night temperatures.
Night temperature is likely to drop to 20 degrees C in Chinchwad, Lavale and Magarpatta by October 26-27, Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting division, IMD, Pune told TOI.
Currently, minimum temperatures are in the range of 21 to 24°C in most locations in Pune.
He said, “However, the night temperature will start falling slowly as there is still some moisture in the air. Day temperatures are, however, likely to go up in the comingdays with significant depletion of moisture and decreasing cloud cover. Afternoontime clouding in the last few days helped keep maximum temperatures around 30 degrees C or even lower. However, with reduction in cloud cover in the coming days and mainly clear skies, solar insolation is likely to reach the surface directly. ” Day temperatures in most areas in the city will rise to 33-35 degrees C by Oct 27, bringing back the October heat, which has evaded Pune most of this month, an IMD forecast on Friday indicated.
“From November, both maximum and minimumtemperatures will begin falling. Monsoon is likely to withdraw after October 22, but there could be remnant moisture in the air. This moisture is not going to be enough to cause rains, but could lead to some clouding during the night, which would prevent minimum temperatures to drop drastically. Nighttime clouding prevents the long wave radiation emitted from the earth’s surface to escape into the atmosphere. When this radiation lingers closer to the earth’s surface, it keeps the night temperatures relatively higher,” said Kashyapi.
He added that Pune willsee mainly clear skies on most days for a week, with even dry conditions around October 26-27.
On Tuesday, Shivajinagar recorded 104 mm rainfall in about five hours till 3 am, Magarpatta 116 mm and Pashan 94 mm rainfall during the same period. As per the IMD, in the last 12 years, this was the fifth instance when Pune city received more than 100 mm rainfall in a 24hour period in October.
