CHENNAI: People who prefer their holidays in the hills will soon be able to enjoy nature from more scenic vantage points as
Tamil Nadu tourism has decided to improve view points and to identify and develop new ones in the coming months.
The move comes after the authorities, who reviewed the facilities and projects at different destinations recently, wanted to offer more choices as the number of visitors have started to increase after a slump during the pandemic.
The existing view points will be developed by adding parking facilities, space for people to stand and watch and other amenities to handle a crowd. They will also be promoted in a better manner. The state currently has around 20 view points including Loam's View, Kodanad View, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose that are popular among travellers.
Tourism secretary Chandra Mohan said that "We are planning to do a survey of the locations to upgrade them to offer a better view, improve safety and parkings and other amenities. We will also identify wayside view points and non-way side view points that are in the interiors. These will be developed to attract more tourists."
He also said that district level committees will also be set up to identify the locations that need to be developed.
"Normally when people go to the hills, they would want to enjoy nature from a vantage point. We are promoting destinations like Meghamalai and Valparai. We would like to add view points."
In addition to tourists who prefer temples and heritage, a good number of visitors prefer to explore nature in the state. A large number of domestic tourists visit Ooty which gets around 35-45 lakh visitors during the season. This shows that a viewpoint will attract more interest. The state government is also working to promote eco-tourism, rural tourism and lesser known destinations like Koli hills, Yelagiri, Valparai, Meghamalai and others.
As traffic is reviving, Tamil Nadu has already achieved the number one position in attracting domestic tourists in 2021 with 115lakh visitors. The state also has 17% share in total domestic tourist movement in the country.
