Panaji: PWD minister Nilesh Cabral, speaking at the open forum on road safety on Friday, sought help from civil society and citizens to acquire land to help improve 12 black spots, where accidents are reported frequently.
He said that in close to 150 spots, the road engineering defect has been fixed, but they are facing an issue due to opposition to land acquisition in improving 12 other spots.
“Roads are often blamed for accidents. The CM and I are working on it. There are 27 black spots identified through the government of India mechanism and we have rectified 11 of them, two will be rectified by May 2023. In 12 such spots we require your help as land acquisition is getting delayed. In another 148 spots identified by state traffic authorities, we have rectified the issue. For spots where we are facing problems with land acquisition, we will share the list with you. ,” said Cabral.
Cabral said that though national highways comprise only 5% of the roads, they account for the most number of accidents. He said that with over Rs 2,200 crore sanctioned by the Centre, work on many pending highway projects is set to begin soon.
