KEVADYA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday cited two examples on how individuals can take small steps, rather than wait for the government or companies to usher in dramatic changes, to help reduce energy consumption and save the environment.
Addressing the global launch of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Modi said people often set their AC temperature at 17-18 degrees at home and then use a quilt or blanket while sleeping. He said reducing the AC temperature by even one degree has huge adverse impact on the environment and urged people to avoid this.
Citing another example, he said, "We see people taking their cars that give barely 5-km mileage from home to reach gyms. There they exercise on treadmills. If you would walk or cycle to the gym, you will save environment and will also have good health." Modi said people are at the centre of the Mission LiFE initiative.
Speaking at the event, UN secretary general Antonio Guterres also urged people to change their lifestyle in order to protect the planet. He said people should opt for products that cause less harm to the environment and avoid wasting food.
