Man drowns in pit dug up for road work in Salem
Salem: A 70-year-old man drowned in a pit dug up by the municipal corporation at Nethimedu in the city on Thursday.
Police identified the victim as R Rajendran. The civic body had dug up the pit as part of road construction, BJP state executive committee member R P Gopinath said. “They didn’t seal it properly after the work. At least 10 two-wheeler users had fallen into the pit while passing through the road, which is inundated with rainwater,” he said.
Corporation officials visited the spot after the death and closed the pit. The Annadhanapatty police have registered a case.
