300 vehicles to sell fish in rural areas, says KFDC
Mangaluru: Very soon, 300 vehicles, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers, will be distributed among fishermen to sell fish in rural areas of the state, said Theertharam AV, chairman, Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC).
He told reporters here on Thursday, that the state and central governments have been implementing several schemes aimed at doubling the income of fishermen, and to develop the fisheries sector. “Vehicles for fishermen have already been sanctioned, and they will be distributed among beneficiaries soon. The government has been giving emphasis to hinterland fishing through a proposal of sanctioning loans to the tune of Rs 2 lakh, and distributing 250 fingerlings free of cost. Subsidized loans are also disbursed for fishermen to set up ice plants, and to procure isolated vehicles,” he said.
The government is also mulling over sanctioning loans for fishermen, through cooperative societies, he said, adding that the proposal is likely to be implemented soon.
