Indian Sars-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (Insacog), a network of laboratories monitoring genomic variations of Covid-19 virus in the country, will hold a meeting on Friday in the light of multiple Omicron subvariants being detected in the country. "The meeting will be held to review the situation. We will evaluate whether there's any increase in the number of cases due to the new subvariants," a member of the consortium told ET.
Insacog had last week detected the presence of a new Omicron subvariant BQ.1.
It is expected that Covid-19 cases could rise in the coming days due to festivals including Diwali next week.
Other than BQ.1, Insacog is also seeing a new recombinant variant BXX in the country and other emerging sub variants like BA5.1.7 and BF.7. Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday had chaired a review meeting where it was decided that mask mandate and Covid-appropriate behaviour should continue across the country.
