World Osteoporosis Day awareness drive conducted in Coimbatore hospital
COIMBATORE: The Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital conducted an awareness campaign on Thursday on the occasion of the World Osteoporosis Day.
After inaugurating the campaign, hospital dean A Nirmala explained how osteoporosis had become more common in the modern era due to the lack of nutrition in diet and the lack of exposure to sunlight.
"Lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle also increase the problem. It is more common among women and elderly people which increases the chance of sustaining fractures," she explained.
The programme educated the general public regarding the importance of maintaining bone mineral density to prevent osteoporosis.
A quiz competition was conducted on the topic of osteoporosis for undergraduates and postgraduates. Similarly, a poster competition was conducted for nursing students. Institute director Dr S Vetrivel Chezian was present.
