MADRUAI: Two Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses collided on the Pamban Road Bridge on Thursday morning. The accident happened two weeks after a private bus and a TNSTC bus collided on the bridge.
Around 15 people suffered minor injuries in the accident on Thuursday morning. They were taken to Rameswaram and Ramanathapuram government hospitals.
Police investigation revealed that one of the buses suffered brake failure and hit the other bus.
The accident occurred around 6am when a TNSTC bus from Trichy was going to Rameswaram and a TNSTC bus bound to Madurai was leaving Rameswaram. When the buses were travelling on the Pamban Road Bridge, the Madurai bound bus suffered a brake malfunction and the vehicle was pulled towards the right side colliding with the TNSTC bus going to Rameswaram. The buses collided head on, according to police.
The Pamban police rushed to the spot and sent the injured passengers and drivers to hospitals. The buses were also cleared from the sea bridge for vehicular movement.
Rameswaram and surrounding regions have been witnessing heavy rain since Wednesday night. Rameswaram, Thangachimadam and Pamban received 98.2, 50.3 and 59.4 mm rainfall by Thursday morning. The vehicles were moving with caution, said police.
On October 12, a private bus and government bus collided head on. Nine suffered injuries, and the private bus had the miraculous escape of not falling into the sea as it stopped after hitting the parapet of the bridge.
Police said the accident happened when the private bus was trying to avoid a few two-wheelers parked on the bridge.
