GURUGRAM: Two cyclists were mowed down by a speeding car after its driver - a 21-year-old college student - lost control, allegedly while speeding, on the Golf Course Road on Tuesday. One of the two victims was standing on the opposite side of the road when the car skidded and hit him.
Dharampal (70), who did odd-jobs and lived in Indira Colony, and Saheb Khan (32), a housekeeper who belongs to West Bengal, were rushed to a nearby hospital. Khan was declared dead, and Dharampal died during treatment, police said on Wednesday.
The driver of the Skoda Rapid, Naveen Kumar, and two other passengers in the car helped take the accident victims to the hospital but fled soon after. The college student was arrested from Wazirabad on Wednesday.
Police said they are going through CCTV footage from the area. They said it doesn't appear to be a case of drink-driving, but they are investigating the matter.
Dharampal's son Umesh was with his father when the accident took place. He told the cops that he and his father used to go cycling every day.
Around 4.30pm on Tuesday, the two of them were near the Sector 42-43 Metro station on the Golf Court Road, with Umesh cycling around 200 metres behind his father.
"The rashly driven car came from the direction of the Sector 42 metro station and rammed my father's cycle. The impact was such that my father was thrown a few metres away. His cycle got stuck in the car, and the driver lost control. The car skidded in the opposite direction towards the Sector 56 road, and also ended up hitting the second cyclist who was just standing on the roadside," Umesh said in his complaint.
A tea stall owner who witnessed the accident told TOI that the passersby rushed to the spot after they saw that the elderly man was severely injured. "His son (Umesh) asked us to call for an ambulance and inform the police. The man was talking to his son at that time," he said.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Preet Pal Sangwan said that a complaint was registered at the Sushant Lok station. "Teams have arrested the accused and the investigation is underway," he said.
The accused has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304-A (death by negligence) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC.
Accidents aren't uncommon on Golf Course Road, which is home to scores of condominiums, offices and commercial areas in the city. In July, a 27-year-old IT executive died after her car crashed into a metro pillar on the road near the Sector 53-54 station. Two months after that, a 29-year-old associate consultant of an MNC was killed after his motorcycle was allegedly hit by a car on the Golf Course Road. Earlier this year, Gurgaon traffic police had planned a safety audit on key stretches, including the Golf Course Road.
