KOLKATA: A 24-year-old fish trader died by suicide after allegedly falling prey to a sextortion racket. The victim, a resident of Haridevpur, was allegedly tricked into a video call by the accused posing as a woman on October 6. Some obscene moments of the chat were recorded and then the victim was asked to pay Rs 6,500. Though the victim paid the amount, the accused demanded more money and also threatened him with dire consequences. Cops are trying to identify the accused.
Unable to cope with the situation, he ended his life on October 7. The Haridevpur police registered a case of extortion and abetment to suicide based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father on October 17.
“Two cell phones were used to call and entrap the victim who was initially sent a Facebook request from a profile in the name of Salu Salma. Once he accepted the request, the video chat started. The accused also threatened to malign his reputation if he did not comply with their demand,” said DCP Atul V.
