COIMBATORE: A 31-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for beating up and injuring her two-year-old daughter.
The Podanur police said the incident came to light when the doctors with the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where the girl child was admitted recently to treat the injuries, alerted them on Tuesday.
“Doctors have found injuries next to the girl’s private parts. We have sought a medical report to confirm if the child was sexually abused. An examination will be conducted for the same,” a police officer said.
He identified the accused as M Dilshath Banu, of Karumbukkadai. She is married to Mohammed Rafiq, a truck driver, with two daughters and a son. “The injured child is the youngest. Initially, Banu said the child was injured when she fell down from the steps. During the inquiry, the woman said she had beaten up the child with a mobile phone charger cable to vent her anger after a quarrel with her hubby. She also felt the girl was annoying at times.”
According to the officer, Banu has physically assaulted her elder daughter as well, injuring her.
The Podanur police have booked Banu under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
An official with the district child protection unit said it was unsafe to send the child with the mother again. “The child will be admitted to a home, where necessary care and protection will be given.”
