Nagpur: After managing to keep major roads and dividers neat and clean, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Wednesday formed prabhag-wise special Smart Swacchata Team on the lines of its Swachhata Team which comprises 105 sanitary workers.
NMC has 38 prabhags under 10 zones. Each prabhag will have a 6 to 10 member smart team under one supervisor.
Additional municipal commissioner Ram Joshi told TOI that despite having 4,500 sanitary workers for sweeping jobs, city’s roads are not clean. “Now, the 500 odd-sanitary workers will also focus on cleaning major internal roads, gardens and marketplaces in their respective prabhags,” he said.
They will concentrate only on cleaning major roads, dividers, outer areas of gardens and commercial places, especially marketplaces, in all zones, as per deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) Dr Gajendra Mahalle.
SWM’s Anit Kolhe, Rohidas Rathod and Lokesh Basanwar were present among others during the formation of the teams.
The teams will work from 6am to 2pm. Like the Swachhata Team, they too will get blue tracksuits, shovels, brooms and tubs for sweeping and removing mud accumulated along the median, footpath, chambers and inlets of the storm water drainage network.
One set of workers will remove dust from the footpath, the second will scoop out mud while another will clean the road dividers. The teams will also clear overgrown bushes along roads and surface.
Joshi clarified that these teams have been formed not with a view to increase city’s Swachh Bharat rankings but to improve overall sanitation situation.
Dr Mahalle said that the teams will upload photos of the spots before and after work every day. The teams will also visit schools to increase usage of Swachhata App.
Joshi also asked the sanitary workers to help increase awareness about waste segregation at source itself by reaching out to every household and individuals with NMC’s 2023 Swachh Bharat slogan ‘Swachhata ke do rang — Hara Gila, Sukha Nila’.
In the next stage, NMC will create awareness on composting wet waste at home.
