Ela Bhatt absent at Gujarat Vidyapith’s 68th convocation
In all, 946 students got degrees
AHMEDABAD: A day after eight of the 24 trustees of Gujarat Vidyapith resigned over the process of selection of governor Acharya Devvrat as the new chancellor, the institution’s 68th convocation ceremony on Tuesday turned out to be a lacklustre event.
What surprised many was the absence of chancellor Ela Bhatt at the ceremony.
The chancellor’s message was also missing from the booklet that was shared among the attendees — a first in the 102-year history of the Gandhian institution.
The convocation was the last ceremony for Bhatt. The board of trustees has yet to accept the resignations of the eight trustees. Senior sources in the Vidyapith say that the new chancellor may take charge on October 21.
VC Rajendra Khimani said, “Chancellor Bhatt was not keeping well and could not attend the ceremony. We will meet the eight trustees soon, and we hope to bring them back to the board.”
