Mangaluru: The government has handed over the the case, where the Belthangady MLA’s car was waylaid by a person on Thursday, to the CID.
The case has been transferred to the CID for further investigation, with immediate effect. Reacting to the development, Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja said, “I welcome the decision of chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and home minister Aranga Jnanendra, of handing over the case to the CID. I am confident that the CID will probe the incident from all angles, and will find out the motive behind the act,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MLA refused to accept a gunman for security, from the district police. The home minister had reportedly directed the SP to provide him with a gunman, soon after the incident.
It may be recalled that the Dakshina Kannada district police had taken into custody Riyaz,38, from Falnir in Mangaluru, and the car involved in the incident was seized. The car in which the Belthangady MLA was travelling, was waylaid, and the driver was allegedly threatened by the accused on Thursday. Dakshina Kannada police had also conducted a search at the residence of the accused. Two mobile phones were seized from the accused, and a tool used in the vehicle was seized from the SUV. A spanner was allegedly used by the accused to threaten the complainant.
A case was registered at the Bantwal Rural police station under various IPC sections, based on a complaint filed by Naveen, the driver of MLA’s official car.
