Ludhiana: Division number 7 police arrested a man duping relatives of people facing criminal cases. The accused used to pose as DSP and inspector and take money from people saying that he would set their relatives involved in criminal cases free. Police also seized an inspector’s uniform, complete with badges, from him. The arrested accused has been identified as Sukhmanjeet Singh, 28, a resident of Manohar Nagar, Dhuri Line. His accomplice, Makhan of Jagraon is yet to be arrested.
Police commissioner Dr Kaustubh Sharma said that he was arrested following a tip-off. A few days back, the accused made a phone call to the police station introducing himself as a DSP and asked the munshi to put him through to a person in police custody. After talking to the accused, Sukhmanjeet took Rs 20,000 from his family on the pretext of freeing him from police custody.
Sharma added that the accused had a similar FIR registered against him earlier too. At times, he would introduce himself as a DSP and at times as an inspector. He is being questioned about how he procured the uniform.
On May 24, Ludhiana rural police arrested Sukhmanjeet Singh and his accomplice Jeevan Singh of Galib Kalan, for duping a woman, Ranjeet Kaur of Hathoor of Rs 32,000 in the guise of cops. They said they would get her son who was arrested in a snatching case released.
Police commissioner Kaustubh Sharma said, “The accused, wearing a police uniform, would stand outside the police station luring innocent people whose relatives were in police lock-up, assuring them that they could arrange a meeting with their relatives. They took their contact number and charged large amounts saying that they would get their relatives freed.”
