COIMBATORE: The Anaimalai police on Monday seized two tonnes of gutka and a goods autorickshaw used for smuggling the contraband. Police arrested five people in connection with the case.
A police team that conducted a vehicle check on the Pollachi – Meenakshipuram Road on Monday morning had stopped the goods autorickshaw carrying the banned tobacco products worth 10 lakh.
Police arrested M Ajay Satheesh, 22, his brother M Sathya, 22 and C Senthil,43, of Sathankulam in Tuticorin district, K Arulkumar, 36, of Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district and M Vignesh, 21, of Erode district.
The five people had bought gutka from Alappuzha in Kerala and were trying to smuggle it to Madurai, police said. They were remanded in judicial custody.
Police are taking strict action against the people selling the banned products, superintendent of police V Badrinarayanan said. He requested people to contact the police control room at 94981-81212 and WhatsApp number 7708-100100 about sales of gutka.
