Rajiv Gandhi University VC injured as students vandalise his office
The university said the students were protesting against the rules framed by the varsity for “joint management” of hostels.
GUWAHATI: The VC of Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), Itanagar, Saket Kushwaha, was injured when students vandalised his office on Monday. The VC's PSOs also sustained injuries in the incident.
The university officials said the students were protesting against the rules framed by the central university two years ago for "joint management" of the hostels.
A statement issued by the central university said Kushwaha and his PSOs were injured when the secretariat of the vice-chancellor was vandalised by the members of the Rajiv Gandhi Students' Union (RGUSU). "Today, an unruly group of students consisting of the members of the RGUSU forcibly entered the VC's chamber by breaking the door and vandalised the office causing extensive damages to the furniture, equipment and many office items," read the statement mailed to TOI.
An RGU official, however, said no FIR was lodged with the police till the filing of this report on Monday evening. Police rushed to the spot after getting information about the incident. "Such display of violence by the students, and that too leaders of the students community, is deplorable and it is desirable that law should take its own course," read the statement.
Early this month, the newly-formed students' union of the university had submitted a representation to the varsity authorities for revival of the earlier prefect system in the hostels. The official said the file was being discussed and processed according to the established procedure of the university and requires discussion and recommendation by the academic council, which has to be approved by the executive council.
