Municipal Corporation Gurugram likely to empanel private companies for waste processing
Municipal Corporation of Gurugram
GURUGRAM: MCG is planning empanelling private agencies for waste processing and disposal of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) at Bandhwari. Officials from the corporation said they will make the recommendation of empanelling agencies to the nine-member committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The objective is to expedite waste processing and RDF disposal since issuing a tender and awarding a contract for these tasks takes time, they said.
There are currently two private agencies working at Bandhwari. One of the companies, a Pune-based firm, is processing four lakh metric tonnes of waste, while the other is processing another four lakh tonnes. MCG has also sent another tender for processing of five lakh tonnes of waste to the state government for approval.
“While the tender process takes time, empanelling agencies can expedite the work of legacy waste processing at Bandhwari. We are going to put forward this recommendation in the meeting with the committee. The final decision will be taken by the committee,” said an MCG official.
The landfill site of Bandhwari has nearly 28 acres of land, out of which MCG has handed over 10 acres to Ecogreen for setting up the waste-to-energy plant. Around 30 lakh tonnes of legacy waste is dumped on 18.5 acres of land available at the site.
MCG officials said that their emphasis is currently on reducing the burden of Bandhwari by encouraging decentralised waste processing. Around 250 tonnes of waste is now processed every day at material recovery facilities, officials said. MCG will further augment capacity to 400 tonnes every day, they added. The civic body has set up MRFs at Sector 44, Ullawas, Badshapur and Beriwala Bagh. The first MRF was established in February earlier this year in Badshapur. The second MRF came up at Beriwala Bagh in July.
