LUDHIANA: A 32-year-old man died of assault injuries allegedly inflicted by his wife and her paramour, at Phullanwal village. The duo also tried to make the incident appear as a road mishap. They had taken the man to a hospital on Saturday, but he succumbed to his injuries a day later.
The deceased has been identified as Surinder Gupta, a vegetable vendor from Phullanwal. The Sadar police on Monday arrested Surinder’s wife Gudia Devi, 30, and her paramour Shailendra Kumar, 38, of Jawaddi and recovered a weapon used in the crime.
The Sadar police lodged an FIR on the complaint of Surinder’s sister Shuda Devi of Fatehpur of Uttar Pradesh.
Inspector Gurpreet Singh, SHO, Sadar police station, said Gudia and Surinder got married in 2013 and had two sons. Gudia and Shailendra had an illicit relationship for the past 10 years. When Surinder came to know about it, he deterred his wife from meeting Shailendra, however to no avail.
The SHO said on October 14, Surinder had a spat with his wife over her illicit relationship. Gudia called Shailendra to her house and the duo took Surinder along with them on the pretext of discussing the issue. After walking for 500 metres from their rented accommodation, the accused hit Surinder with an iron rod. Thereafter, the accused hatched a conspiracy to make the incident appear as a road mishap.
The accused took injured Surinder to a hospital where they claimed that he had met with an accident. Due to Surinder’s serious condition, the doctors referred him to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, where he succumbed to injuries.”
The SHO said the autopsy report revealed that the man had died of a head injury caused by some blunt weapon and ruled out the possibility of a road mishap. Gudia and Shailendra’s escape following Surinder’s death confirmed the murder angle.
The Sadar police traced the accused and during questioning they confessed about their crime. The police have lodged an FIR under Section 302 (murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
