MUMBAI: About 96% of the voters across the state and 97% in Mumbai city exercised their franchise in the election for the Congress president's post held on Monday.
In
Maharashtra, the MPCC and Mumbai Congress Committee are separate entities, therefore separate voting was held - MPCC voters cast their votes at Tilak Bhavan while Mumbai Congress voters exercised their franchise at Rajeev Gandhi Bhavan. The entire electoral process was supervised by AICC in-charge Pallam Raju, a former union minister. Veteran Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor are contesting against each other. "Out of 561 voters of the MPCC, 542 voters exercised their right to vote, which also includes ballot voting,'' Pallam Raju said.
Raju said voting took place between 10 am and 4 pm. Among the voters were MPCC president Nana Patole, former CMs Ashok Chavan, Prithviraj Chavan, Sushilkumar Shinde and Congress legislature party leader Balasaheb Thorat. In the Mumbai Congress office, out of 237 voters, 229 voters exercised their franchise.
Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge and party MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor are in the fray for the top organisational post. Counting will be held on October 19 in New Delhi.
