Bhubaneswar: Nigeria qualified for the quarterfinals of FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Chile in their final fixture of the group stage at Kalinga Stadium on Monday.
While the Video Assistant Review (VAR) made its first appearance at the World Cup at Kalinga Stadium in favour of the South Americans, the ensuing goal was not enough for them to make it to the knockout stage as strikes from Blessing Emmanuel and player-of-the-match Bisola Mosaku helped the Africans join Germany, who beat New Zealand 3-1 in Margao, from the group into the next stage.
Nigeria showed their domination from the word go, and won their first corner in the second minute from a run down the right flank. While it did not lead to a conversion, the African girls did not have to wait long to find a breakthrough. The opener came in the fourth minute when a Nigerian attack outside the box led to the ball reaching the feet of the Nigeria No. 8 Blessing and the midfielder sent a shot upfront.
While her strike did not have too much power, it still eluded the outstretched hands of Chile goalkeeper Catalina Alvarado and gave Nigeria the lead in the crucial match
The remainder of the first half saw the Africans keeping up their attacks into the opposition half.
