HYDERABAD: Posing as cybercrime cops from Delhi, fraudsters duped a deputy superintendent of prisons department of Rs 97,500 by offering to remove his obscene viral videos on social media.
Ch Dasharatham, deputy superintendent, lodged a complaint with Kushaiguda police stating that he received a call from a person posing as Ajay Kumar Pandey of cybercrime police, Delhi.
The caller informed the official that his obscene video was going viral on YouTube and to remove the same he would have pay ₹97,500 to cybercrime officer Rahul Sharma. He paid the amount and when
Rahul Sharma asked him to transfer ₹85,000, he got suspicious and approached police.
Police said the offenders had even sent a fake letter to the complainant posing as cybercrime sleuths.
"The official said that he did not see any obscene videos on YouTube but when he saw the letter head of Delhi police, he clicked a link sent by the accused thinking that they were police. We are yet to get clear details of how the crime was executed. A case was registered under sections 420 of the IPC and 66-C of the IT Act," Kushaiguda police said.
