
Mumbai News Today Live Updates, 16 October, 2022: NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray urged the BJP to withdraw their Andheri East bypoll candidate Murji Patel, in reverence to late MLA Ramesh Latke, whose death has necessitated the election. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has fielded the late MLA’s wife Rutuja Latke from the constituency.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said a comprehensive mining policy will be approved by January 26 next year. While urging industry to strike a perfect balance between requirement and natural resources. Fadnavis was addressing a Mincon Conclave at Nagpur where he outlined the necessity for regulations in the mining sector to ensure it does not lead to exploitation. Instead, mining should serve development and growth of the region, he said.
The Congress has demanded that the state government provide aid for farmers and declare a ‘wet drought’ in Maharashtra due to excessive rain. Parts of the state have seen heavy rain even in the month of October. “The Congress party has already demanded that wet drought be declared but the state government clearly ignored farmers. The Congress party is firmly standing behind the farmers…,” said state Congress president Nana Patole.
After Sharad Pawar and Raj Thackeray, Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik has written to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, urging him to hold discussions with BJP leaders and let Rutuja Latke be election from the Andheri East Assembly constituency unopposed.

Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule expressed confidence that his party will win the upcoming bypoll to Andheri East Assembly seat in Mumbai and claimed every vote to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena faction would mean supporting the NCP and Congress.
"Every vote to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena means a vote to the NCP and the Congress which have consistently insulted our icon and freedom fighter late V D Savarkar,” the BJP leader said.
Nihar Thackeray, the grandson of Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray, has said that he supports the Eknath Shinde faction of the party and is ready to campaign for the upcoming Andheri East Assembly byelection as well as the Mumbai civic body polls. He also did not rule out joining electoral politics.
The BJP, supported by the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, has fielded Murji Patel against the Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party's Rutuja Latke in the November 3 byelection. It will be the first major electoral contest in the state after Shinde's rebellion brought down the previous Maharashtra government led by Uddhav Thackeray in June this year.
Nihar, the son of Bindumadhav Thackeray, Bal Thackeray's eldest son, is a lawyer by profession. He is also part of Chief Minister Shinde's legal team in the battle in the Supreme Court over which is the 'real' Shiv Sena. (PTI)
A total of 797 Congress delegates from Maharashtra will cast their votes in Mumbai on Monday to elect the new president of the party with veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor in the fray for the top post.
Out of these 797 delegates, 561 are from the party's Maharashtra Pradesh unit, while 236 belong to the Mumbai unit.
While the Maharashtra delegates will cast their vote at Tilak Bhavan, the grand old party's state unit headquarters here, the Mumbai representatives will vote at its city unit office in south Mumbai. The voting will be held between 10 am and 4 pm. (PTI)

In view of the bypoll, the Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday for the Andheri East Assembly constituency on November 3, said an official.
In an official release, the district election officer on Saturday stated that the holiday will be applicable to central and state government offices, semi-government offices, public enterprises, banks and others. Read more

In what could be a breather to motorists battling the traffic snarls in Dahisar check naka of Mumbai and the satellite city of Mira Bhayander, the BMC issued tender to build an elevated road linking Dahisar (West) to Bhayandar (West) – the last leg of the coastal road.
At present, it takes nearly 30 minutes for a 5-kilometre journey via the Dahisar check naka, the main road connecting the Mira Bhayandar to the Greater Mumbai Region, apart from Western Express Highway. Read more

"It doesn't make any sense to hold this bypoll for a tenure of one-and-a-half years only. It takes a heavy toll on all the candidates who contest assembly election. It is better to avoid it this time. It is better to let Rutuja win unopposed," Pawar.

A special court in Maharashtra's Thane city has granted bail to a bus driver who was arrested for alleged possession of opium under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Special judge A N Sirsikar directed the alleged accused Kamlesh Kumar Laxmanlalji Gehlot, a native of Rajasthan, be released on bail on a bond of Rs 1 lakh with one or two sureties of the like amount.
A team of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) had arrested the driver on May 30 and claimed to have seized 40.50 gm of opium from his possession. (PTI)
An offence has been registered against two persons from Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly cheating a manufacturer of hygiene products of Rs 18.25 lakh, police said on Sunday.
Based on a complaint lodged by the Hyderabad-based manufacturer, the Narpoli police on Saturday registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, an official said.
The accused got in touch with the manufacturer, claiming to have a gotten an order to supply adult diapers from a hospital in Navi Mumbai, he said. (PTI)
Paper items meant for commercial purposes worth Rs 4.21 crore were allegedly stolen from the godown of a businessman in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Sunday.
The victim owned a godown at Purna village in Bhiwandi town here. As a friendly gesture, he had allowed another company in the same business to store its raw material in his godown and also given them a key for access to the premises, an official from Narpoli police station said. (PTI)
