Panaji: The directorate of transport will soon start a tender process for remote enforcement through CCTV camera monitoring of roads. A total of 13 locations have been identified across Goa where the traffic violation rate is visibly high.
“This will be the year of remote enforcement wherein we will have a crackdown on violating motorists without much human intervention,” said director of transport, Rajan Satardekar. “We are therefore seeking equipment that can integrate with VAHAN and give us the best results,” he said.
This move comes days after transport minister, Mauvin Godinho announced that cameras will be installed in Goa on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in the next 2-3 months to capture violators that engage in rash or drunken driving.
In a trial run, a camera was installed at Chogm road, near Porvorim, wherein a number of violators were captured breaking traffic rules. The camera was able to capture details of vehicles violating traffic rules during day and night. Even the number plate was clearly recorded.
The directorate is confident that the same technology can be replicated across Goa wherein a camera trip method can record ten second clips of the violation and capture four still images precisely.
The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) has already installed cameras at prominent places in Panaji with a command and control centre at Altinho. The cameras will be installed at the Verna junction, O Coqueiro circle at Porvorim, Dolphin circle at Saligao, the entry road towards Margao, Patradevi border among other places.
