Gulf returnee alleges torture by cop
Thiruvananthapuram: A 37-year-old Gulf returnee has alleged that he was assaulted by the sub-inspector of Kallambalam police station.
Nabeel A, son of Aliyaar Kunju of Nazimudeen Manzil at Kuthirathadam in Kallambalam, said his rib was broken in the incident and was under treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (TMCH)
The incident happened on October 9, a day ahead of his Gulf journey, and he had to come back from the Gulf due to the injuries.
Nabeel said he had reached the station to get his two-wheeler back.
According to him, the police took his two-wheeler parked in front of his house at night on October 8.
Nabeel alleged that the sub-inspector of the station behaved rudely.
“The officer kicked on my back using knees several times and slapped me. My friend, who accompanied me, requested the officer to stop hurting me. But he did not pay attention. Since I had to go to the UAE the next day to join for the job that I got after years-long effort, I kept quiet. My flight was at 5pm on October 10 and I had to get medical care at Manamboor Government Hospital before the journey. After reaching the Gulf, I could not get up from bed and I was admitted to Al-Shifa Hospital there. The doctors there recommended that I should not work at least for a few weeks. So I decided to come back. I was admitted to TMCH as I reached back on Wednesday,” said Nabeel.
However, the police said that the allegations were baseless as his vehicle was taken into custody from Kallambalam Junction.
The accused and a few others had clashed with each other at the junction and he escaped leaving his two-wheeler when the police reached there. He came to the station to get the vehicle back and left with the vehicle without any issue.
Police said a case was registered against him under the 118-A of Kerala Police Act for creating public nuisance.
“The accused might have injured in the clash during the night and not due to police torture. He raised baseless allegations against the police as a revenge for summoning him to the station. He was not attacked by any officer at the station,” said SHO of Kallambalam station Vijayaraghavan.
