Mumbai records its highest October rainfall in a decade

MUMBAI: After consistent rain activity over the past few days, Mumbai saw dry weather conditions on Saturday. However, owing to the continuous rains in October, the total rainfall recorded this month has touched 216 mm.
This is the highest monthly rainfall when compared to the past ten years. So far, the highest monthly rain was in the year 2012 when 197mm of rainfall was recorded in the month of October. The all-time highest October rainfall recorded was 376 mm in the year 1998. Last year, the monthly rainfall recorded in October was 11.2mm.
The average rainfall required for the month stands at 91.3mm. Last week, between October 7 and 8 due to intense overnight rains, the 24-hour rainfall recorded by the IMD Santa Cruz observatory touched 114mm. This was the highest 24- hour rainfall for the month of October in the last one decade.
The IMD has indicated that light to moderate rainfall will continue next week as well, especially between October 17-19. A yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar is in place for October 16 indicating thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rain and gusty winds (30-40kmph) at isolated places being very likely. The official withdrawal date for monsoon from Mumbai this year was October 8. However weather enthusiasts say that it may be delayed.
