Margao: Germany secured an easy 6-0 win against Chile in Group B to become the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the
FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Friday.
Jella Veit (20’), Alara Sethilter (24’), Mara Alber (40’), Marie Steiner (58’), Loreen Bender (60’) and Laila Portella (90+5) were among the goals for Germany.
The first real chance in the game came in the 12th minute when Germany’s Marie Steiner had a shot on goal, but Chile goalkeeper Catalina Alvarado made a crucial save to keep her side in the game.
Germany did not want to repeat their mistakes in the first game where they allowed Nigeria to score first and then had to claw their way back into the match for a hard-fought 2-1 win. They passed, stretched and opened up the Chile defence with ease.
Veit gave Germany the lead in the 20th minute from close after getting hold off a shot from her teammate on the edge of the six-yard box. All that she had to do was shoot past Catalina.
Four minutes later, a poor goal kick by Catalina saw Germany get the ball in an ideal possession and Sehitler found the top corner with a powerful shot.
Five minutes before the break, Germany inflated their lead as they stretched the Chile defence again and Alber didn’t disappoint when put through with only Catalina at her mercy.
In the second half, Germany continued their dominance as Marie converted a penalty, Loreen capitalised on a goalkeeping error and Laila also rounded off the goalkeeper to dance their way into the quarterfinals.
