MUMBAI: MSRTC on Friday announced that it will temporarily hike fares by 10% in all buses, except Shivneri and Ashwamedh, from October 21 to 31. The fares will go up in the range of Rs5-100, and the hike will be withdrawn from November 1, when fares will be back to normal in these buses.
An MSRTC spokesperson said the corporation has permission to hike fares up to 30% during peak season — which is usually during festivals such as Diwali. Fare hikes will be for ordinary, semi-luxury, Shivshahi and sleeper buses of the corporation. “This year, we decided to hike fares only up to 10% and have kept some premium bus fares such as those of Shivneri buses from Mumbai to Pune with zero hikes,” he added.
MSRTC announced on Thursday that it will run 1,500 extra buses from October 21 to 31 to various destinations from across Maharashtra to cater to the rush of commuters during the Diwali festival. This came as private tourist buses in the state nearly doubled rates for journeys from Mumbai to Goa, Mahabaleshwar and Udaipur for Diwali.
