Coimbatore: Members of Ulaga Tamil Kootamaippu, Tamil Sangamam, Tamil Kaappu Kootiyakkam and a host of other outfits staged a protest against the Centre’s move to impose Hindi in various spheres of communication, in the city on Friday.
Protesters raised slogans against the Centre’s bid to promote Hindi at the cost of regional languages. The protest was led by former Tamil University vice-chancellor C Subramanian, who is also the coordinator of Ulaga Tamil Kootamaippu.
The protesters noted that the recent recommendations of the parliamentary committee on official language, headed by Union home minister Amit Shah, was nothing but Hindi imposition.
The recommendations aim at replacing English with Hindi at all levels, intending to make Hindi as medium of instruction in central educational institutes, and wanting English language to be discontinued in competitive exams and Hindi to replace it. TNN
