BENGALURU: Intense fog enveloped Bengaluru city on Friday morning after heavy overnight rain. While visibility dipped, humid conditions too prevailed.
According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, pockets like Yelahanka, Bagalgunte, Yeshwantpur, Vidyaranayapura and SR Nagar received around 7cm of rain in 24 hours till Friday morning.
Rainfall was moderate to heavy in most parts of the city in the night, according to officials from Indian Meteorology Department (IMD), Bengaluru.
Attributing the cloudy precipitation conditions to the prevailing system in different parts of peninsular India, IMD officials clarified that south-interior Karnataka will continue to receive rain for the next five days. "The upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal and a similar active system in east-central part of Arabian Sea, off the coast of Gujarat, have resulted in the rainfall over peninsular India, including Bengaluru," A Prasad, meteorologist, IMD Bengaluru explained.
This apart, a depression has been identified near the central Andaman Sea and is likely to impact weather conditions over Bengaluru and south-interior Karnataka. "The depression is likely to turn into a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal in a few days. Hence, south-interior Karnataka is likely to witness thunderstorms. A yellow alert has been sounded for entire south-interior Karnataka districts for the next five days," Prasad explained.
After night-long rain, Bengaluru woke up to a chilly morning covered with thick fog. Several areas on the outskirts were engulfed in fog, reducing visibility. The maximum and minimum temperatures fell to 22 degrees Celsius and 19 degrees Celsius, respectively. The temperatures were 29 deg Celsius and 20.1 deg Celsius, respectively, on Thursday.
A senior IMD official clarified that the relative humidity index in Bengaluru was 96%, KIAL 93% and HAL 95%, resulting in the misty morning. Due to misty conditions prevailing across the city, the visibility was down from 8km to 2km.
