THE NEPHEW of a minister has been arrested in Bareilly after he allegedly tried to run over employees of a restaurant after they refused to serve him food late on Tuesday night.

A case was lodged after the restaurant owner’s son lodged a complaint at the Prem Nagar police station alleging that the minister’s nephew, Amit Kumar Saxena (32), and four unidentified men tried to run over their staff and demanded Rs 1 lakh as extortion money. The case was lodged against Saxena, and his four unidentified accomplices under sections 147 (rioting), 384 (extortion), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.

Amit is nephew of three-time MLA from Bareilly Arun Kumar Saxena, who is Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Forest and Environment, Zoological Garden and Climate Change.

Prem Nagar SHO Nehar Singh said Amit was arrested on Thursday and was sent to judicial custody. “On the night of October 11, Amit along with others had gone to a restaurant. Since it was around 10.45pm, the restaurant was shutting down and they were told that food won’t be served. Then, there was an argument between the restaurant staff and Amit, who threatened and tried to run them over with his car. No one was injured as the restaurant workers moved away. He also allegedly demanded Rs 1 lakh as extortion. The complainant says there were three-four people with Amit who said he was with one other person. We are investigating all aspects,” said Singh.
