Son of Justice Jiendra Vir Gupta, former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana HC, Justice Hemant Gupta entered the legal profession in 1980 and started his practice in the same HC. He was appointed additional advocate general of Punjab in 1997 and continued till 1999. He was appointed a Judge of the HC on July 2, 2002.
As a member of the computer committee, he oversaw digitisation of the entire records of judicial files and streamlining of listing of cases. Justice Gupta was transferred to Patna HC on February 2, 2016 and became its acting CJ on October 29, 2016 before being appointed chief justice of Madhya Pradesh HC on March 18, 2017. He was elevated to the SC as a Judge on November 2, 2018. He is scheduled to retire on October 16, after a stint of nearly four years.
