BENGALURU: Minister for primary and secondary education minister, BC Nagesh, on Thursday said the hijab ban will continue inside the classrooms of Karnataka schools.
The minister was speaking to media after the Supreme Court announced a split verdict on the hijab issue.
“As a democratic government, we welcome whatever judgment we have received from the Supreme Court. But we had expected a better judgment. As you know that, throughout the world, women are demanding not to wear hijab or burqa. But there is a split judgment from the Supreme Court. So whatever Karnataka high court had given the order, it is valid as on today. So we are going to follow the rules that are framed as per the Karnataka Education Act."
"Definitely a three-bench SC is going to think everything on demand on students and the order of Karnataka HC and we expect a better judgment,” the minister said, pointing out to the protests in Iran and Iraq.
“Ban on the hijab in classrooms will continue. The KEA does not permit any religious items inside the classrooms. So we are very clear that hijab will not be allowed inside the classes in Karnataka,” he said adding that the Karnataka HC order is valid due to the split judgement of the SC.
