AURANGABAD: Armed dacoits barged into the bungalow of a leading businessman, held him and five members of his family hostage and robbed valuables and cash totally worth over Rs 4 crore in Latur district, 265km from here, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The robbery in the upscale locality of Kanhaiya Nagar on Kanheri road took the police by surprise and shocked the local business community. The Vivekanand police station registered an offence of armed dacoity after Akshay, son of the businessman, Rajkamal Agrawal (62), lodged a complaint.
Latur superintendent of police Nikhil Pingale, citing the statements of the family, said, “The dacoits were carrying sharp weapons and also a firearm. They robbed about Rs 2.25 crore in cash and gold weighing about 2.4kg.”
Police said the dacoits, numbering around five or six, climbed the compound wall of the bungalow around 3am and entered the house from the rear door, which was the easiest to knock down.
