Dumka: A 15-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in Kathikund area of Dumka, fuelling speculation of foul play, officials said on Wednesday.
Kathikund police recovered the body from the tree in Badtalla village. The 15-year-old resident of the adjoining Aamgachi village, had recently gone to stay with her uncle at Badtalla, from where she went missing on October 8, police said. Shyamal Kumar, the officer in-charge of Kathikund police station, said, “The girl was a student of Class X in a government school. Her parents had filed a missing diary report last Monday. The residents of Badtalla village spotted a corpse hanging from a tree early on Tuesday morning and informed the police.”
OC Kumar said the corpse was decomposed when it was recovered, suggesting that she had died at least two days ago. “The body has been sent to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. We are waiting for the report to decide our next course of investigation,” he added. The residents of Badtalla village told the police that the deceased minor had recently arrived to stay with her uncle and aunt. Dumka has been in the news for all the wrong reasons for the past few weeks.
In the past three months, Dumka has seen atleast three to four such crimes against women. On August 23, a jilted lover set ablaze a girl, later identified as Ankita Singh, 17, for refusing his advances in Dumka. The girl succumbed to her injuries later at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science. Weeks later, in October 7, a 22-year-old woman was set ablaze in Dumka’s Bhalki village allegedly by a man whose marriage proposal she spurned. The woman, a resident of Jarmundi, was rushed to a local hospital, the officer said. Authorities said they have stepped up vigil to counter crime against women, while opposition have blamed the government for failing to control situation.
