KOLKATA: A 24-year-old youth, who had murdered his 70-year-old grandmother in 2017 after she refused to pay for his new bike, has been convicted and given life sentence by a local court. The victim's son and father of the accused had lodged an FIR and provided the primary evidence in the case.
According to the evidence given by Mithu Chakraborty, his son Prokash (then 19-year-old) had assaulted Chhaya, hitting her on the face more than a dozen times. The trial was completed with the accused remaining in custody all through, said senior officers.
Police said Prokash, who had failed HS examination, had reportedly fallen into bad company and had started taking drugs. "The accused would often attempt to extort money from his grandmother, whose only source of income was a widow pension of Rs 1,500 every alternate month, and a fixed deposit of Rs 50,000. Prokash would inflict physical and mental torture on Chhaya, whenever she refused to pay him," said an officer at Lalbazar.
On January 17, 2017, when Chhaya refused to liquidate her fixed deposit of Rs 50,000 to pay for a bike, Prokash allegedly assaulted her with household utensils. "Mithu, who had just returned home, saw his mother lying unconscious on the floor and bleeding with Prokash hurling household articles and utensils at her. After Mithu alerted the neighbours, police arrived, broke open the gate and took the victim to hospital, where she was declared dead," said an officer. In his complaint, Mithu mentioned that his son, Prokash, had murdered his mother.
Following a custody trial, submission of evidence and witness statements, the additional district and sessions judge, Sealdah, found Prokash Chakraborty guilty and awarded him rigorous imprisonment for life, and a fine of Rs 10,000.
