"I AM EVIL, I DID THIS," allegedly read a handwritten note left behind by a neonatal nurse named Lucy Letby, age 32, who is accused of killing seven babies. She is also charged with trying to kill ten other infants.

The prosecution finished its opening statement and laid out the case.

Nick Johnson KC concluded his testimony by informing the Manchester Crown Court of several handwritten and post-it notes discovered while investigating her residence.

In the frontline

Doctors are in the frontline of the battle against coronavirus pandemic which has now affected close to 5,000 in India and has claimed 149 lives. With reports of para-medical staff and doctors getting infected by coronavirus coming into the light, the focus has now shifted to these brave souls.

Lack of resources

Covid 19 is highly infectious and thus to treat the patients, doctors and para-medical staff has to wear Personal Protection Equipment or PPE which comprises of protective clothing, goggles, gloves etc. But these are in short supply and expensive (Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 a set) and healthcare workers are under pressure to conserve resources, reported Times of India.

No breaks

The protective gears have to be discarded after one use. With staff shortage and short supply of PPEs, many doctors and nurses are now resorting to non-stop work for 6-7 hours in one go, without any breaks. Many nurses and doctors have been complaining of fatigue, dehydration and headaches due to the gruelling schedule, reported ToI.

No washroom trips

Like their Chinese peers, in India too the medical staff at the forefront of Covid 19 battle are avoiding water to reduce that bathroom break. Some are even using adult diapers to avoid washroom tip altogether.

No fan or AC

Working in the month of April in India is no cool affair. Temperatures in many parts of the country are already close to 40 degree mark. Despite that hospitals are switching off ACs and fans to prevent the spread of the virus. On top of that, the thick protective gear causes excessive sweating leading to hyperhidrosis, a skin infection due to excessive sweating in hands, in doctors and nurses.

Hereford resident Letby has entered a not-guilty plea to all charges.

The kids are referred to as Children A through Q because the media is not naming the kids or their families. According to the prosecution, one of the two triplets Letby is accused of killing was Child P. Since he was in another room, their brother was still alive.

A day after Child P passed away, Letby is accused of sabotaging Child Q. Mr. Johnson said Letby fabricated medical records to give herself an excuse.
The court was informed that the nurse attempted to kill a baby girl four times before succeeding.

Police also questioned the nurse over her decision to send the baby's parents a sympathy card. Letby was removed from night shifts in April 2016 after hospital specialists expressed worry about the correlation between the nurse’s presence and unexpected death incidents.
