Oct 1-12: District records 118% more rainfall than normal
Nagpur: After witnessing record-breaking rainfall in July, August and September, Nagpur district has now received the highest rainfall for the first 12 days of October.
According to the data of Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, the district has recorded 64.4 millimetres (mm) rains between October 1-12. This was 118% more than the normal rainfall of 29.6 mm for the period. In October 2016, Nagpur had recorded 68.3 mm rainfall.
Moreover, the showers received till now are already much above the normal rainfall for the entire month of October, which is 29.6 mm. “The highest for Nagpur has been 72.1 mm, which was recorded on October 3, 2013. For Vidarbha, the all time-record for the month of October is of 220.2mm, recorded on October 3 in 1988,” said officials.
Following heavy rainfall on Tuesday, the city recorded 45 mm rainfall by Wednesday morning. Met data further showed that the cumulative rainfall for Nagpur from June 1 to September 30 has been 1447mm, 54% excess than the normal of 938.5 mm.
“This is the second highest in last 16 years. The highest was 1639.8 mm, recorded between June 1 to September 30, 2019,” added officials.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently predicted that the rainfall averaged over the country for October is most likely to be above normal — 115% of the Long Period Average (LPA).
As per the local met department, most parts of Vidarbha are likely to receive scattered rainfall in the next 4 days. Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and Gondia are expected to witness fairly-widespread rains. Nagpur will receive few spells of thundershowers till October 15.
As reported by TOI, the withdrawal of southwest monsoon might get delayed in the region rainfall continuing in different parts of Vidarbha. IMD has already predicted delayed withdrawal for Maharashtra. According to the officials, the normal date for monsoon withdrawal over Vidarbha, including Nagpur is between October 10-15.
Officials added that the persistence of anti-cyclonic circulation over the north west India and north-westerly wind over Vidarbha will define the monsoon withdrawal. “This is major signature that causes cessation in rainfall over Vidarbha. A delay in withdrawal may possible but not more than a week, as per model guidance,” they added.
