
Mumbai Live Updates: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday said it was following the laid down rules of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Service (Conduct) Regulations, 1989, while processing the resignation of Rutuja Latke, the proposed candidate from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) for the upcoming Andheri East by-election. BMC officials said officers who have resigned from the civic body have to serve a compulsory 30-day notice period before they are relieved from service. The Bombay High Court will hear on Thursday a plea by Rutuja Ramesh Latke.
Criminal cases have been registered against seven leaders from the Uddhav Thackeray camp of the Shiv Sena for allegedly making ‘offensive statements’ against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a rally. The cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Vinayak Raut, Bhaskar Jadhav and Sushma Andhare among others, news agency PTI reported. The statements were allegedly made at Mahaprabhodan Yatra launched by ‘Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ at Thane on Sunday.
In other news, the Election Commission of India’s (ECI’s) decision to allot two swords and shield symbol to the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has been touted by the party as a “repeat of historical events”, when the Sena used the symbol to contest the Thane Municipal Corporation polls and emerged as the winning party with the largest number of seats.
The Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) in Thane district of Maharashtra will increase the ex-gratia of its employees by Rs 900 to take the total amount to Rs 11,000, an official said.
Municipal commissioner and administrator Vijaykumar Mhasal made the announcement on Wednesday after holding talks with the representatives of the civic workers unions.
Spokesperson of the civic body Sunil Zalke said the decision will benefit 4,317 employees of the corporation. (PTI)
Seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai are 97.09 percent full with a cumulative water stock of 14,05,247 ML.
Same day last year (2021), water stock was 14,40,165 ML and lakes were 99.50 percent full.
The seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai are Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi, located either in Mumbai at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar. In the past 24 hours catchment areas of the seven lakes have collectively received 32 mm of rainfall.
A man based in Thane has lodged a police complaint alleging that his younger brother has been held captive in Thailand by his employer company since the last one month. The compay is demanding USD 3,000 for his release, an official said on Thursday.
The victim, Ashish Dubey (31) had gone to Thailand on September 12 and has been tortured mentally and physically and forced to complete the target given by the company of contacting and convincing people to buy cryptocurrency, according to complainant. Rutuja Latke resigned on October 3, however, her resignation is yet to be accepted by the civic administration. The BMC’s decision not to immediately relieve Latke has put a question mark on her ability to contest the Andheri East bypoll. The IIT Bombay has developed a technology to aid speech-to-speech translation from English to Marathi.
Titled the Bahubhaashak project, which is being developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in collaboration with IIT Madras, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and IIIT Hyderabad, the technology enables speech-to-speech translation of over 40,000 videos available on Swayam Central AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) and National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL). Mumbai received more than 100 millimetres (mm) of rainfall between October 1 and October 11, quite unusual for this time of the year, said officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

With the spread of swine flu on the rise, Maharashtra recorded a six-fold increase in the number of cases — from 552 on July 30 to 3,477 on September 30, and a 10-time spike in deaths — from 20 to 191 during the same period, the Health Department said in its latest release.
The state has reported the maximum number of swine flu cases — highest since 2018, said health officials, adding that the mortality rate, however, remained low due to more vigilance and awareness among the people amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Read more
Mumbai reported 194 new coronavirus cases, a jump from 129 a day ago, taking the overall tally to 11,51,776, while the death of one more patient due to the infection pushed up the toll to 19,737, the city civic body said.
The metropolis has reported more than 100 coronavirus cases for the sixth day in a row. On Tuesday, Mumbai had logged 129 Covid-19 cases, but zero death.
The use and sale of flying lanterns in Mumbai will be prohibited for 30 days beginning October 16, as per an official order.
The ban on the use, sale and storage of flying lanterns, also called Chinese lanterns will be in force till November 14.
A police official said the use of sky lanterns may cause danger to human life and safety due to "the situation prevailing in areas under the control of Mumbai Police".
The Maharashtra government has no role in the alleged delay by the Mumbai civic body in accepting the resignation of its employee Rutuja Latke, the candidate of the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction for the Andheri (east) bypoll, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
Earlier in the day, Anil Parab of 'Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray' party alleged that Latke was being pressured by the camp led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, now called "Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena", to contest on their ticket for the November 3 bypoll. (PTI)
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, who is currently in jail over money laundering charges, has claimed that there was pressure on him to "betray" his party, and that he landed in jail as he did not pay heed to it.
In a letter to his mother dated August 8, a week after his arrest, Raut said, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sainiks were like her own children and till the time he was in jail, they would take care of her.
Everyone is aware that he has been framed under false and bogus charges and statements are extracted from him at gun point, Raut alleged. (PTI)
Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the Election Commission's move to freeze the 'Shiv Sena' name and the 'bow and arrow' symbol has angered his party workers who will teach their detractors a lesson.
Thackeray said their organisation will brave all attempts to destroy it and emerge stronger. ''We will teach our detractors a befitting lesson. Our boiling blood will ensure our detractors are taught a lesson," he said.
Thackeray further said there will be a Shiv Sena "wave" and "we will have a chief minister from our party" in near future. (PTI)
A special court here has sentenced a 20-year-old man to three years jail for pulling a "dupatta" (stole) of a school-going girl with "sexual intent", and observed that this kind of incident causes terror in the mind of such victims and their families.
The man was found guilty of offences committed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) as well as relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act by special judge Priya Bankar.
The prosecution said the victim was studying in Class 10 and was 15 years old when the incident took place in 2017 in suburban Mumbai. (PTI)
The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested fugitive gangster Chhota Shakeel’s brother-in-law Arif Sheikh alias Arif Bhaijan and builder Jayesh Shah in connection with an extortion case, a police official said.
The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Crime Branch took custody of the duo, who were in jail in separate criminal matters, in the case registered against them at the Dongri police station, in which Shakeel has been shown as a wanted accused, he said. (PTI)
