NEW DELHI: Indian Railways' earnings from passenger traffic soared 92% to Rs 33,476 crore during April-October compared to the same period last year as operations turned normal from February after almost two years of restricted run following the outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020.
As per the ministry, the total revenue from passenger segment for the first six months of 2021-22 was Rs 17,394 crore. Based on current trends, officials are hopeful of railways meeting the full year target of Rs 58,500 crore.
During April-October, there was a 24% rise in passenger traffic in reserved category to 42.9 crore, compared to a little over 34.5 crore during the corresponding period last year. As a result, revenue from this segment, shot up 65% to Rs 26,961 crore, railways said in a statement. In the unreserved segment, passenger traffic jumped almost three times to 268.6 crore between April and October 2022, compared with 90.6 crore a year ago. Revenue saw a five-fold increase and was estimated at Rs 6,515 crore.
