THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to withdraw from the move to change the medium of language to Hindi in the question papers for the competitive examinations.
“There have been media reports that the parliamentary committee on official languages has recommended to bring in certain changes in the medium of language in which question papers are printed for competitive exams in various posts in Government of India. It is learnt that the question papers will only be in Hindi language,” the chief minister said in his letter.
“There are also reports that Hindi will be made the compulsory medium of instructions from Kendriya Vidyalaya to IITs, IIMs and central universities. The committee reports to have recommended that knowledge of Hindi should be ensured for selection of employees. The use of all the national languages specified in our Constitution is to be encouraged,” Vijayan said in his letter.
“Hindi cannot be imposed as the main language of instruction in our higher centres of learning. The state-specific aspects in the educational sector have to be recognized. There cannot be a hasty decision in this matter,” he added.
The chief minister pointed out that the country accords a pride of place to unity in diversity.
“We are one nation with the feeling of sisterhood and brotherhood in the midst of cultural, linguistic and religious diversities. While the younger generation should be encouraged to learn languages other than their mother tongue too, any attempt which will be even remotely perceived as imposition of a language will give rise to apprehensions among people in general and job aspirants in particular,” the chief minister’s lettersaid.
