Ludhiana: The Vigilance Bureau booked a dead man and arrested his two sons in the Rs 1.80 crore paddy scam on Tuesday. The arrested accused are partners in a rice mill.
A case was registered against late Ganpat Rai of Durga Rice and General Mills, Sahnewal, Ludhiana, his two sons, Dinesh Kumar and Rajesh, both partners in the mill, under sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, banker, merchant or agent), 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. Ganpat Rai died a few years ago while Dinesh and Rajesh were arrested on Tuesday.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), economic offences wing, Suba Singh said that the embezzlement case dated back to 2012 and an inquiry was being conducted into it since 2016. He said that Ganpat Rai was alive at the time and had also joined investigation. However, he died during the investigation. He added that Dinesh Kumar and Rajesh Kumar would be produced in court on Wednesday.
The SSP said that the accused received paddy for shelling in their rice mill. The mill owner has to provide the government a set percentage of the rice after shelling of paddy. tnn
